Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Galadrian's Wall Iron

I didn't remember it being so, but this map is easy street.  Keeping the Blood Ogres from transforming other ogres isn't even all that necessary, unlike campaign and heroic, but if you do, the map is a piece of cake.  It's nice to get a break after a challenging first two modes.

Impressions

Because it was so easy most heroes ended up with 'A's.  I gave out only one 'C' to Razz.  His performance was honestly not really that bad, but I just felt it wasn't quite as good as the 'B' heroes.

The only real surprise here was giving Durax a 'B'.  This map requires good tanking or crowd control of the bigger mobs, and those just aren't his skillset.  He certainly didn't do bad, just not in the same class as our 'A' heroes, who truly mopped up this map.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B
  • Arivan - B
  • Catha - B
  • Reg'son - A
  • Prince Denas - B
  • Razz and Rags - C
  • Bravebark - A
  • Vez'nan - A
  • Xin - A
  • Phoenix - A
  • Durax - B
  • Lynn - A
  • Bruce - A
  • Lilith - A
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

Reg'son and Wilbur tie for Best Choice here.  Wilbur's DPS is perfect for taking down the large mobs, and Vindicator does the same for Reg'son.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Blood Quarry Iron

This map ended up being a lot easier than the heroic mode, but it took me a long time to get there.  As I've talked about in the past, I start with Faustus and work backwards.  My initial build strategy was highly RNG dependent, just like heroic mode - getting Blood Gnolls at the wrong time pretty much guaranteed a loss.  Despite that, I made it all the way through the heroes until Reg'son, at which point it just fell apart.  Reg'son is an awesome hero, but Vindicator just can't contribute to dealing with the horde of gnolls midway through the map and I was getting overrun.  It was at that point I tweaked my strategy, found the build I demonstrate in the videos, and got much cleaner runs.  Of course I like to demonstrate the same build for all heroes, so I ended up going back and redoing all heroes prior to Reg'son.  Thankfully this is a short map.

Impressions

The net result of all this is that we have an easy mixture of 'A's and 'B's, unlike my first time through where I was starting to hand out 'D's.  It's things like this that make me nervous, because I know the next map is a doozy, and if I can't pull a hero through it, is it because I just don't have a good enough build?  You can never know if there is a better build you might have tried.

For this map though, there aren't really any surprises.  I did have to give Reg'son and Xin 'B's because this map just hit their weaknesses especially hard, but they still do alright.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B

Best Choice

Whereas this map highlighted the weaknesses of otherwise good heroes like Reg'son and Xin, it resulted in some outstanding performances for some of our other heroes, such that I'm declaring this one a four-way tie.

First up, Bravebark demonstrates his great flexibility in handling both hordes and larger enemies - Oakseeds and Rootspikes to deal with the hordes of gnolls, and Branchball to get the pesky Ogre Magi out.

Next, Durax's clones plus his extremely high movement speed means he always has blockers where you need them.  Plus, when there are only a handful of tough enemies on maps like this one, Sapphire Fangs does tremendous work on a solitary opponent.

Finally, Phoenix and Wilbur are just Phoenix and Wilbur.  Long time readers will have no problem understanding why they take the top spot.

I'm really worried about the next map - Beheader's Seat.  I remember it being a beast on campaign mode, to say nothing of heroic and iron.  This is one of the three major tests remaining to us, so join me to see if our heroes are up for it.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Galadrian's Wall Heroic

The heroic mode steps up the game versus campaign mode as usual, but our heroes prove adequate to the task.  The map tries to intimidate you through the large number of Blood Ogres (especially the sets of five on each lane at the very end).  However, Blood Ogres' DPS is pretty low, so really the only danger they pose is transforming lowly gnolls into Blood Gnolls.  The key is to know that Blood Ogres cannot use this ability while they're being blocked.  Once you have a blocking plan in place, managing the remaining hordes becomes much more manageable.  It's still a rather hard map - especially the final wave, which requires very good micro and getting at least non-horrible RNG.

Impressions

They are actually some notable things to comment on this time around.  I was seriously disappointed to give Lynn a 'C' for this map.  She's a personal favorite of mine and I hate giving her bad grades, but I really struggled with her here.  I wish her DPS was just a bit better.

While our Best Choice on this map was very clear, Reg'son, Bravebark, and Vez'nan all put into spectacular performances.  I would grade them A+ if I were doing that sort of thing, but I swore I wouldn't, as I fret enough already just assigning plain letter grades.  I was especially surprised at Vez'nan, considering he can barely damage the Blood Ogres, but it turned into an exercise of judicious use of Dark Pact coupled with stalling the ogres with reinforcements until Soul Burn came off cooldown.

Eridan, Catha, and Razz and Rags all earn 'C's, which should surprise no one, but the real surprise was giving Arivan a 'D'.  I really struggled to finish with him, and it truly was a matter of playing nearly perfectly (especially wave 6) and getting good RNG.  What I've realized is that while Catha and Razz have terrible DPS, they both have crowd control abilities that help make up for it.  Arivan's DPS is better, but he has much less crowd control ability.  Normally he does better than both of them as a hero's DPS is generally the most important thing they bring to the table, but there are certain maps like this one where the balance shifts, and having better CC is ultimately what makes the most difference.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - C
  • Arivan - D
  • Catha - C
  • Reg'son - A
  • Prince Denas - B
  • Razz and Rags - C
  • Bravebark - A
  • Vez'nan - A
  • Xin - B
  • Phoenix - A
  • Durax - A
  • Lynn - C
  • Bruce - B
  • Lilith - A
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

Phoenix once again, and I'm giving her the nickname 'Lawnmower' from here on out for her ability to mow down hordes.  Using her on maps like this is just so terribly satisfying.
