Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Royal Gardens Campaign

I want to make a joke here where the only thing "impossible" about this challenge is actually finding a challenge, but I know I'll regret that.  There are hard maps coming, and we might have to start handing out some Fs as soon as the iron mode for this map.  But in the meantime we have another trivial A for everyone.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Redwood Stand Iron

This is one of those weird maps that isn't necessarily all that hard, but is very intense and nerve-wracking anyway.  That's because even when you have good strategy and are using an ideal hero, it's still possible (unless you're using Wilbur) to get bad RNG and have a hyena slip through your defenses.  That's because of a rather infuriating way the game works.

If you haven't figured it out already, ranged attacks are not guaranteed to hit in this game.  When a ranged attack is made at an enemy, the projectile is aimed at the spot the enemy will be at.  As long as the enemy is in fact in that spot when the projectile lands, it does damage.  However, the projectile trajectory does not take into account possible changes in the enemy speed.  This is why you'll see artillery towers at your choke point make seemingly bizarre shots sometimes - they're aiming where the enemy would have been if they had not been blocked by your melee towers.

All this applies to hyenas and their sprint ability - ranged attacks don't account for the possibility of them speeding up and slowing down, which sometimes allows them to run right through your defenses if the RNG is just right.

I knew all this already coming into this map, but I did learn something new about the game here as well.  Hyenas can be blocked if they are stunned!  Bruce used his King's Roar ability that happened to stun a hyena right next to him, which he then proceeded to melee to death.

Impressions

Aside from the above-mentioned hyena shenanigans this map isn't really that hard, so no one gets worse than a B, and honestly that mostly goes to non-ranged heroes who can't help with the hyenas.  I was pleased to give Arivan his first non-trivial A for this map, and Durax has the distinction of being the only non-ranged hero to get an A, because he's just that awesome.  Other than that there's not much to say.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B
  • Arivan - A
  • Catha - B
  • Reg'son - B
  • Prince Denas - B
  • Razz and Rags - B
  • Bravebark - B
  • Vez'nan - A
  • Xin - B
  • Phoenix - A
  • Durax - A
  • Lynn - B
  • Bruce - B
  • Lilith - B
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

"Death from above" Wilbur again.  As the video shows, he can lock down both the hyenas and the Gnoll Gnawers on the right side, meaning the left side just has to take care of a few paltry gnolls.  He only allowed a single hyena to get past the tree, and I could have even prevented that if I had bothered to use his Hero Spell.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Redwood Stand Heroic

Finally we get back to a somewhat challenging map.  This map isn't too terrible, though.  The only real challenges are taking down the hyenas in wave 2 when your hero doesn't have a ranged attack and just having enough DPS and cooldowns for when the swarms get thick.

Impressions

Everyone did pretty well here and only Razz and Rags gets a C.  I may have had bad RNG or just didn't play him very well - I'm still mastering the proper use of his hero spell, which is tricky to use really well.

At first I was going to give every non-ranged hero a B at most just because it makes the wave 2 hyenas really tricky, but I gave Durax an A anyways because he was just so awesome with everything else on the map.  He's quickly becoming one of my favorite heroes.

I really wanted to give Lynn an A as well, but for as amazing as she did, it wasn't quite as good as Durax, and the hyenas were difficult, so we'll call it a B+ (but I'm not going to get into pluses and minuses in general).  I really like Lynn for reasons I can't quite explain.  She's very confusing as a hero - when I look at her on paper it seems like she should be a lower to mid-tier hero at best, but her actual performance keeps surprising me, and she sliced up this map without any problem (hyenas aside).

Lilith was another pleasant surprise.  I've been skittish about her ever since I had to hand out that C way back when, but she chewed up this map pretty easily.  The only issue I have with her is she requires a lot of micromanagement.  You have to be selective with her targets to get the most out of Reaper's Harvest and Soul Eater.  In addition, she has survivability issues.  Even though she has medium armor, her health seems to go down quicker than it should, and unlike other ranged heroes she cannot regenerate health while using her ranged attack, so you have to retreat her far behind your blockers if you need her to heal.  Still, I'm reconsidering how good a hero I think she is.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B
  • Arivan - B
  • Catha - B
  • Reg'son - B
  • Prince Denas - B
  • Razz and Rags - C
  • Bravebark - B
  • Vez'nan - A
  • Xin - B
  • Phoenix - A
  • Durax - A
  • Lynn - B
  • Bruce - B
  • Lilith - A
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

Wilbur, of course.  As awesome as some of the other heroes did, Wilbur shows what it truly means to trivialize a map.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Walkthrough - Redwood Stand Campaign

Ugh, I was hoping to find a challenge here, but definitely not.  This map doesn't even require a hero, honestly.  'A's for everybody, nothing to see here, let's move along.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Waterfalls Trail Iron

This map ended up being trivial, so all heroes get 'A's again.  However, it took a bit of practice to get the setup right to where it is trivial.  The key is creating a defense that can automatically take care of the constant stream of perythons on the left side without relying on a hero with a ranged attack.  Once that is done, it's just a matter of the hero being able to take care of the stream of gnolls from the right side, which any hero can do trivially.  I did discover it is possible to get really bad RNG at the beginning and have a flyer slip through my left defenses, and I did consider giving every non-ranged hero a B grade as a result since they can't provide backup in those situations, but in the end that proved to be very rare, so I decided against it.

I'm hoping this is the last map we'll have to give the 'trivial' label to, as the whole point of this exercise is to be able to grade and rank heroes based on their performance.  We'll see as we move on to Redwood Outpost.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Waterfalls Trail Heroic

This one was only mildly challenging, so no one gets worse than a B.

Impressions

Again, not much to say when it's an easy map.  Hopefully that will stop soon.  I was slightly surprised to only be able to give Bruce a B, but other than that impressions were few.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B
  • Arivan - B
  • Catha - B
  • Reg'son - B

  • Lynn - B
  • Bruce - B
  • Lilith - B
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

Durax actually takes top spot for this map.  His Crystallites ability plus the ability to move the clones plus his fast movement makes him the king of maps like this where enemies are coming at you from multiple wide-spread lanes with varying intensities.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Waterfalls Trail Campaign

I knew as soon as I trivially completed the map with Catha that this one wasn't going to pose any challenge.  I had to fight off boredom by making sure I caught every item going over the waterfall.  So again, 'A's for everyone and let's move on.

Kingdom Rush Origins Impossible Hero Challenge - Waterfalls Trail Campaign

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - The High Cross Iron

While this map isn't completely trivial, it's still easy, so everyone gets an A or B here.  Even the Bs aren't really that bad, you just have to work slightly harder than with an A hero.

Impressions

Not much to say since it was so easy.  Reg'son gets his first non-trivial A here, which I like.  For some reason he's a personal favorite of mine.  Xin gets another A as well, so perhaps I've been misjudging him.  I might have just gotten really bad RNG on that first go-round.  Durax continues to impress with how awesome he is as well.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B
  • Arivan - B
  • Catha - B
  • Reg'son - A
  • Prince Denas - A
  • Razz and Rags - B
  • Bravebark - A
  • Vez'nan - A
  • Xin - A
  • Phoenix - A
  • Durax - A
  • Lynn - B
  • Bruce - A
  • Lilith - B
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

Wilbur again, not surprisingly (get used to hearing that).  Once I get through this challenge I might go back and see what maps Wilbur can solo without any towers whatsoever.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - The High Cross Heroic

Finally we're back at a map that provides some challenge.  Again, though, the scores are somewhat relative.  I chose to examine each hero's performance when aggressively calling waves early.  It made things a lot harder with some heroes, who nearly leaked mobs to the exit, but if I didn't call any waves early it honestly would have just been another fairly trivial map.

Impressions

There weren't as many surprises this time around.  Catha ended up being the only hero getting a C, which is ominous for a "free" hero on so early a map.  Her DPS is pretty bad, of course, which played a large part.  I haven't used her very much aside from leveling her up though, and I'm guessing that her strengths are actually on harder maps with tougher enemies where you can rely on advanced towers for DPS and use her more for crowd control.

My only genuine shock was giving Xin an A after his awful performance on Gray Ravens heroic.  Now it may be that I was so pleasantly surprised at how easy it was with him that I was a little over-generous and he really should have been a B, but regardless he did a lot better than expected.  A lot of it had to do with him being able to actually put Daring Strike to good use, taking down Gnoll Gnawers before they even got far on the map.

Lilith somewhat redeemed herself on this map, pulling a B.  Like Catha, I believe her strengths will be more evident on maps with powerful individual enemies, not tons of fodder.  Other than that everyone else performed just about as expected.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B
  • Arivan - B
  • Catha - C
  • Reg'son - B
  • Prince Denas - B
  • Razz and Rags - B
  • Bravebark - A
  • Vez'nan - A
  • Xin - A
  • Phoenix - A
  • Durax - A
  • Lynn - B
  • Bruce - B
  • Lilith - B
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

Wilbur, of course, because he again can just about solo the map without towers, but special mention needs to go to Durax, who absolutely destroyed this map.  His ability to be in two (or three) places at once is enormous when you have divided streams of enemies.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - The High Cross Campaign

And once again we have a trivial map that everyone does well on.  'A's for everyone, high fives all around, and let's move on in search of more interesting challenges.

Kingdom Rush Origins Impossible Hero Challenge - The High Cross Campaign

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Gray Ravens Iron

There's really nothing to say about this one.  It's an easy map again - far easier than heroic mode - so everyone gets an A again because there's simply no challenge.  Wilbur technically takes the top spot as he can basically solo this map with no towers at all.

This was to be expected with the earliest maps.  Things will heat up and get interesting once we get a few maps in.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Gray Ravens Heroic

Things actually become slightly interesting on this map.  The grades are relative here, since it's still extremely easy and there was never a worry of anyone not being able to get the job done.  But we do get to see how well heroes handle a long stream of weak enemies, which gives us a preview of trickier later maps like Royal Gardens iron mode.

Impressions

There were a few surprises here in how some of the heroes did.  I was pleasantly surprised by Lynn's 'A' performance.  While she doesn't have any typical AoE abilities, Fate Sealed's area damage on death coupled with its relatively short cooldown did excellent work on the more tightly packed groups, and she allowed very few leaks.

Bruce also surprised me.  He's definitely geared more as a single-target damage dealer, but he did very well in holding back the tide nonetheless.  Partly this is due to his high base DPS - he simply can kill the enemies almost as fast as they come like Wilbur or Faustus.  But even though his DPS isn't quite as good as theirs (and isn't true damage, either), just whenever it seemed like he was going to get overwhelmed, either King's Roar fortuitously came off cooldown or I was able to use Guardian Lions to keep things under control.  He still is not ideal, hence the B, but it's a lot better than I was expecting.

I was disappointed with Lilith's C-grade performance, although in retrospect perhaps I shouldn't be.  She allowed a lot of leaks back to my melee blockers, and was actually very low on health by the end of the map.  But this is probably the worst type of map for her.  Reaper's Harvest is woefully overkill on gnolls, making it pointless, and wimpy enemies like this basically negate the power of Soul Eater as well.

I was not surprised by Xin's C performance.  So far I have been pretty underwhelmed by him in other scenarios where I've used him, and I fear there might be a number of Fs in his future.

Final Grades

  • Eridan - B
  • Arivan - B
  • Catha - B
  • Reg'son - B
  • Prince Denas - B
  • Razz and Rags - B
  • Bravebark - B
  • Vez'nan - A
  • Xin - C
  • Phoenix - A
  • Durax - A
  • Lynn - A
  • Bruce - B
  • Lilith - C
  • Wilbur - A
  • Faustus - A

Best Choice

Phoenix, hands down.  This kind of scenario is tailor-made for her, and she chewed through it without a sweat.

Kingdom Rush Origins (Steam) Impossible Hero Challenge - Gray Ravens Campaign

I have a feeling I'm going to regret starting this before I'm done, but given how much I've enjoyed Kingdom Rush Origins, I had this idea for a new playlist (or rather, a set of playlists).  The question is - is every hero good enough to take on Impossible mode?  In my Impossible mode playlist I obviously chose the hero best suited for the map which made it easiest to complete, but can any hero get the job done?  That's what this series will attempt to answer.  I will do every map - campaign, heroic, and iron - with every hero.

For each map I will rank each hero on an A-F scale for how well they do.  Here's what the grades mean:

  • A - An ideal hero to take on the map
  • B - The hero can get the job done, but they're a sub-optimal choice
  • C - You can win the map with this hero, but it's going to be hard and painful
  • D - You're only going to win with this hero with really good RNG
  • F - I was not able to complete the map with this hero

I really hope I'll be able to figure out how to do each map with each hero so that I don't have to hand out any Fs, but given my experience already in my Impossible difficulty walkthrough I have a feeling that's not going to pan out.

We start over at the beginning in Gray Ravens campaign mode.  As this map is so easy, every hero gets an A here, and there's nothing really to comment on.  Honestly you don't even need a hero to complete it, even on Impossible difficulty, but we start here anyway for completeness' sake.

Completing this is going to take a very long time, and I'm not going to hold up other videos (like getting back to Baldur's Gate) while seeing it to completion.  So expect me to finally get back to BG sometime soon.  Oh, and Kingdom Rush Vengeance will be on Steam soon...
